1 John 5:16-21
16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.
18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.
19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
ESV

From v21, Let us note for our subject: “Keep Yourselves From Idols”
A) Idols are sometimes imagined to be some kind of wooden figure or one made out of precious metal or even an image like the “NFL” logo or brand that has the whole world captivated by a piece of pigskin being kicked and passed and fumbled on a 100 yard grass field.
B) In the NLT version of the bible, v21 is translated this way: 1 John 5:21
21 Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.
It appears from this verse that an idol is anything that “might” take God’s place in our hearts. This warning was given to the readers of that day that were dealing with “dualisms” the allowed those Christians to carry on a relationship with the world through the lust of the eyes and lust of the flesh because although the “flesh is evil”, it had no effect on the spirit of a Christian, that was the real deal. This type of thinking allowed relationships with the “idols” of the day without any conscience. Christians must avoid idols.
C) The truth is that the Lord requires “all of man” to be ‘sanctified and not just parts of a man/woman. The Lord wants all of man/woman to be His.
1 Thess 5:23-24
23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
ESV
The Apostle Paul is making a point that even though(some thought the Lord was coming back soon), There is a accountability for “right living” that includes the “body” or “the home of evil urges” the flesh that just can’t get no satisfaction”. We know that there were so many “idols in the city”
We must avoid idols and use what we know about our glorious salvation:
John the Elder gives us 3 Knows to Help us keep ourselves from idols.

I. We Know That We Don’t Have To Keep On Sinning And That God Protects Us And Satan Can’t Touch Us.
18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.

II. We Know Where We Are From God But The Whole World (systems, governments) Is Under The Power Of Satan)
19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

III. We Know We Are In The Incomparable True God And We Have Already Won.
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
