Deliver Us From The Evil One…

Matthew 6:5-15 (NIV)
5  “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
6  But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
7  And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
8  Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9  “This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
10  your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
11  Give us today our daily bread.
12  Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

This prayer which is called the “Lord’s Prayer’ has s principle of praying and giving thanks for our “daily need”. In vs 13, we read a a request to “led us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil”

The Identity Of The Evil One (1 Peter 5:8)

Notice if you please that the text calls out the enemy as a “daily need” to be delivered from just as our “daily bread”. It is my belief by Scripture that “daily need” does not translate into “daily greed”. In 1 Peter 5 :8, the bible tells us the “evil one” is evil one is hunting us down to devour us as a lion devours it’s prey.

1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)
8  Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

If we take a look at the Scriptures in 1 Peter 5:8-11, we see that the attack of the evil one can be a daily occurrence, so we must be ready at all times. This also suggest we must obey 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NIV)
17  pray continually;

Remember, You got the power by the grace of God! Romans 6:16 (NIV)
16  Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey–whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

In First Peter 5:8-11 where God’s people are in a dark place of testing but if they had on their “armor of light”

The Fear Tactics During The Attack Of The Evil One

8  Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

A lions roar is said to be heard for a distance of over 5 miles and that it can shake the forest. All the animals hear it and are “fearful”. This fear of the lion works to make hunting the prey easier. In the same manner, our adversary the devil uses the “fear of loss” as bait to fulfill our need. Paul writes that the our need will be supplied, Philippians 4:19 (NIV)
19  And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

The Attitude During The Attacks Of The Evil One

8  Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

1 Peter 5:9 (NIV)
9  Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

Don’t panic no matter what you hear from other humans, they maybe “agents of fear” from the “kingdom of darkness”. Trust in the Lord and lean not to your own understanding about your circumstance. The Psalmist wrote: Psalm 136:1 (NIV)
1  Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever.
Romans 6:16 (NIV)
16  Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey–whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

1 2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV)
7  For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

Father God, Deliver us from the evil one Amen.
